JB Wholesale pet gate sale
For the next few days only, JB Wholesale has cut the prices on all pet containment gates by 10%. A pet gate can be a huge help if you’re trying to confine a puppy to a certain room, to give your cats a “safe” area away from your dogs, to keep the dogs out of the nicest room in the house, etc. They can even be used at your front door (if you don’t have a screen door), to keep a dog from running out of the house when the door is opened. They’re incredibly handy to have on hand (we have about six of them for various purposes), and a 10% savings can really add up on the more expensive models. Support animal charities this holiday season
There are many animal charities who offer online shopping, so you can buy gifts and help out the animals at the same time. To name just a few, there’s the ASPCA store, the Texas SPCA store, and the North Shore Animal League store. Also, if you’re looking for new and unusual gifts, you can sponsor a dog or cat at NSAL, or buy a special memory brick. If you give a gift membership to the Humane Society of the United States, your recipient will receive your choice of some nice gifts (depending on the amount of donation), and if you give a gift sponsorship with Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, the recipient will get a year’s subscription to the really wonderful Best Friends magazine. Best Friends has a store as well, featuring some great books and clothing items, so it’s also a place to look for gift ideas. There are many other wonderful animal charities which would appreciate your donation this holiday season: United Animal Nations (home of the Lifeline Grant), Pasado’s Safe Haven, and the Animal Legal Defense Fund also come to mind, and please don’t forget the local charities working hard in your community.
One more idea—for a really cool gift for a younger person (like the goth in your life!), consider adopting a bat from Bat World. Bat World sends out beautiful sponsorship packages with full-color photos and the gift includes a year’s subscription to the Bat World newsletter. It’s fun and different, and because it’s a virtual adoption, there’s no mess to clean up!

National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week 2006
November 5th through 11th is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, sponsored by HSUS. If you remember to visit the homepage of AnimalSheltering.org during that week, you’ll be able to participate in polls and drawings to win some great prizes. Featured are many items donated by Mutts comic creator Patrick O’Donnell. The event is primarily aimed at shelter staff, but if you go and read their stories, I’m sure it will be an eye-opening experience. Perhaps it will even be the incentive you need to volunteer.
